The UNESCO-World Heritage Zollverein
In the centre of the Ruhr Metropolis – where once Europe’s industrial heart was beating – today lies the world’s most beautiful coal mine and the once biggest coking plant.
Structural change up close – Art, Culture, Creativity and Nature at Zollverein
In the past the once highest-performing stone coal mine set records producing coal, processing it to coke around the clock. Today the coal mine and coking plant are a UNESCO-World Heritage site, authentic and unique, home of spectacular productions and living symbol of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 with about 2.2 million visitors in 2010. Zollverein offers a huge range of attractions. History, culture, creativity, gastronomy, outdoor and leisure activities - all this presents Zollverein 365 day a year.
Tracking coal and coke – indulge in the history of a region
Journey through heat, dust, fire and water on a guided tour through the preserved plants. Follow the “Path of Coal” on the Denkmalpfad ZOLLVEREIN® (Monument Path). Experience industrial history. Explore the breathtaking buildings on your own with the help of the ZOLLVEREIN® Mediaguide. Catch the spectacular change of the region at the Ruhr Museum. Discover 5.000 exhibits on 5.000 square meters. Get to know the region at the Portal of Industrial Heritage. Whether you are looking for some peace and quiet or fun and games for either young or old, whether you are keen on letting your gaze drift across the region from sitting in one of the gondolas of the Sun Wheel or meet some of the artists in their studios - everyone finds their favourite spot on the 100 hectare wide terrain.
Daily offers for guided tours. Reservations strongly recommended.
