The fortress complex located on the striking mountain peak above Singen is an expansive nine hectares (0.04 sq. miles) in size. It is considered to be Germany's largest fortress ruins. Its defensive walls and casemates, its mighty tower stumps and the large ruins of houses still provide a good impression of how this bulwark must have appeared in the 18th century, when it was considered to be impregnable. Visitor-friendly signs provide additional information. The information center not only shows a model of Mount Hohentwiel as it was in the 18th century. It also provides information on the fortress ruins with video films.
Mount Hohentwiel itself, a former volcano, is a nature preserve. Many kinds of flora and fauna live on the mountain. And anyone, who has taken an excursion on this solitary rock on a beautiful day and enjoyed an impressive view of Lake Constance, will confirm that it is the most beautiful view of Baden-Württemberg there is.
