The old town
Towers, plazas, lanes and stud work: an urbanistic treasure between fortress and Lower Town.
As an ensemble memorial , which is still surrounded by a completely maintained town wall, it enchants with its late-medieval character. Caringly restored edifices, wells, arms and figures shape the image just as much as the romantic lanes, plazas and corners.
The gothic church of St. John, for example, comprises the most beautiful Franconian church door of its time. Another very remarkable object of interest is the statue of St. John , which dates back to the year 1498 and is the work of an unknown master. The historic town hall, built in 1583, with its ballroom and the former hall is an attraction for people interested in architecture as well as in culture, because many special events take place in these rooms.
You may walk up the narrow Pottu-Lane to the Upper Town, take a stroll across the "Wolves' Gap" along the town wall heading for the fortress. Standing on the "Marienplatz" you may admire the "Rosenturm" or the baroque presbytery built by J. M. Küchel. Furthermore, you may visit the minster or the urban infirmary built by Dientzenhofer with the gothic infirmary church. No matter what you are interested in, Kronach is always worth a visit!
