Usedom Local destinations, sights and Places to visit
The second largest German island is also the only two state-owned Baltic island, since the eastern part belongs to Poland. Usedom is considered the sunniest region of Germany and attracts all year round to tourists. Since 1999, the entire island was declared to the Usedom Island natural park.
The most famous destinations of Usedom are the broad sandy beaches, the Emperor Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf and Bansin with its magnificent villas resort architecture, the impressive piers and the charming boutiques and cafes.
The largest city of the island of Usedom is Swinoujscie. Cultural attractions include the Polish seaside resort with the highest lighthouse in the Baltic Sea, the Mühlenbake and fortifications from the 19th Century: the East and West Battery and Castel Sant'Angelo.
At Peenemunde, the two largest museums of can Usedoms be found: the Historical and Technical Museum and the Phänomenta that explains science and physical phenomena vividly.
A trip to the famous Osteseebäder Karlshagen Trassenheide and Zinnowitz is not only due to the prevailing resort architecture and the fine sandy beaches very worthwhile. Nature lovers can escape the hustle and bustle of cities with a trips to the Usedom Achterland in the south of the island of Usedom. The scenic hilly landscape with small villages, beautiful forests and meadows is ideal for long hiking trips. Popular destinations are the Dutch windmill in Benz, and the castles of Stolpe and Mellenthin.
