In Augusta Emerita it was the Consul Marcus Agrippa who promoted the building of the theatre, which was inaugurated between 16 and 15 B.C., on the evidence of the inscriptions over the two doorways to the orchestra. Such buildings were built for political motives and did not reflect the taste of the public, which tended to prefer circus and amphitheatre entertainments. From the theatre, the ruling authority achieved effective propaganda, for itself and for the Roman way of life, both through the actual building, its physical grandeur, epigraphs and iconography, and through the message that could be transmitted from the stage.
Thus, around the 1 century the present stage facade was erected, undergoing further alterations between 333 and 335.
Mainly due to Christianity, which considered theatrical performance immoral, becoming established as the offical religion, the building fell into disuse.
